Dear Friends:
I believe that I have been a strong progressive voice in the State Senate (and before that in the State House of Representatives) over the last number of years.
As chair of the Senate Finance Committee for the last 8 years we were in the majority I led the efforts to mitigate the effects of the very conservative Pawlenty budgets and now as the ranking minority member of the Finance Committee I have been the Senator both in committee and on the Senate floor who has exposed the sham of the extreme Republican budget and voted no last year on their borrowing to balance the budget. If re-elected, I look forward to resuming my chairmanship but now to be able to work with Governor Dayton in passing a progressive budget that will work for all Minnesotans and not just a few.
I have consistently supported all rights for the gay and lesbian community in Minnesota and was one of only 12 Senators who voted no on the so-called Defense of Marriage act in 1996. This year I have participant and voice in our efforts to defeat the egregious marriage amendment. And, I feel that I have been a compelling voice against the voter ID amendment which is simply voter suppression speaking very strongly against it both in committee and on the Senate floor.
I have been involved heavily in issues involving the University of Minnesota and higher education, reformed child support collection and enforcement, authored most of the major housing legislation, provided the money for the displaced homemakers' appropriation, authored the legislation to allow state support for stem cell research, and established the Minnesota Film Board.
Most recently, as chair of the Finance Committee I put the Legacy Amendment together in the committee, and, in particular, originated the arts and culture portion of the amendment. Partly as a consequence of that President Obama appointed me as one of 32 members of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
I look forward to meeting all of you as the election progresses but in the meantime do not hesitate to call me at 651-699-4476 with questions or go to my website at
And, again, I hope that I can have your support in the primary election on August 14th. I look forward to representing you.
